I love The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. And I'm fascinated by this song from its soundtrack. Its title is "Step Out," but the lyrics are a little darker. I could've sworn they were singing "House on fire. Leave it all behind you..."

So I launched a quest to learn what the real lyrics are...

I found several web sites offering lyrics for the song, but I still was hearing something different. (To be fair, singer Jose Gonzalez's heartfelt mumble is endearing -- but it's also hard to hear exactly what he's singing!) It's such an important-sounding tune -- so what is he saying? Here's my answer...

"House on Fire" -- Jose Gonzalez's lyrics for "Step Out" from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Step outside. Won't you step outside. Better step out...

Step outside. Take a step outside. Better step outside. Time to step outside...

Oh-oh-oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh oh
House on fire, leave it all behind you.

Oh-oh-oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh oh...
Dark as night. Let the lightning guide you.

Oh -- --- --
Step outside. Take a step outside. Better step outside. Time to step outside.

Oh -- --- --
House on fire, leave it all behind you.

Living blind.
Feeding appetites.
Staying through every heart stub, every move.
Being blind.
Breathing half the time...
Oh-oh-oh, oh oh. Oh, oh, oh. Oh-oh-oh, oh oh...
House on fire, leave it all behind you.

Oh-oh-oh, oh oh! Oh, oh, oh! Oh-oh-oh, oh oh!
Dark as night, let the lightning guide you.

Step outside. Time to step outside. Better step out...
(Whistling...)
Broke to
Monday.
Something's not the same.
Blank head.
Crossed eyes sweep the floor.
Feel your
presence
in your absence.
Shut the door.
Oh-oh-oh, oh oh. Oh, oh, oh. Oh-oh-oh, oh oh.
House on fire, leave it all behind you.

Oh-oh-oh, oh oh. Oh, oh, oh. Oh-oh-oh oh oh
Dark as night, let the lightning guide you.

Oh-oh-oh, oh oh. Oh, oh, oh.

Just believe and...

Step outside. Take a step outside. Better step outside. Time to step outside.
Better step out --

Click here for the whole soundtrack, and to read reviews. (Jose Gonzalez is also a member of a Swedish band called Junip...)

And here's a lovely two-minute music video by a fan that captures the spirit of the entire movie.

Another site suggests that they're actually singing "feeding at the tides"...

And one site actually transcribed the lyrics as "Broke tooth one day. Something's not the same..."
